Find out how to fix this problem, quickly–with the help of your friendly Culligan Man
Usually, if your water smells like sulfur or rotten eggs, the reason is because your water has high Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) content.
H2S is a gas that is released from the earth and finds its way into groundwater. It’s especially common in well water located near shale, sandstone, coal, peat, or oil.
(Occasionally, a rotten-egg smell in your water could also be caused by a water heater or by sewage pollution in your water. If you’re on city water, the most likely explanation is your water heater.)
Negative Effects of H2S
In addition to potential health risks, having H2S in your water can cause all sorts of annoying problems. H2S in your water can:- Cause coffee and tea to be discolored and taste funny
- Corrode metals (steel, copper, iron, brass), including silverware
- Cause foods cooked with water to taste “off”
- Create yellow or black stains in your bathroom and kitchen
How Do You Fix It?
Here at Culligan, you can find everything you need to get rid of H2S and that sulfur/rotten-egg smell from your water.
The first step we have to take is to test your water, so we can be sure of the real cause of the rotten-egg smell.
Fortunately, here at Culligan we offer this service free. One of our water experts will come to your home to test the water (you can’t send it away to a laboratory because H2S is a gas and could dissipate during transport) and let you know the source of your rotten-egg smell. You’re under no obligation whatsoever.

I am writing to applaud your company’s products and service. As a 20 year customer, I have had a very positive experience. Having tried other water treatment products and technology to handle my shallow ground well’s iron, silt and other impurities in agricultural land, I came to Culligan because other products simply didn’t do the job as well. Other companies, including the well driller, didn’t diagnose the problem accurately and their service was undependable at times.
Culligan has a great reputation for servicing what they sell promptly and thoroughly. Receptionists are courteous when you call, remember you, and dispatch technicians promptly at the customer’s convenience. I have no worries leaving the house keys for Culligan visits when I am not home. Technicians are dependable, competent and friendly.
Though your company is more expensive than some others, I would still recommend Culligan as a company of choice for water treatment issues due to their accurate diagnosis of what you need, quality of their products, and their excellent in-home service.

George came to my home to assess my old softener and agreed with me that is was definitely time to upgrade. He tested my water to determine the hardness of it. He showed me brochures and explained in great detail the workings of three of your softeners. We both agreed on one that would satisfy my needs. On 12-20-10 he arrived with the softener, dismantled the old one and installed the new one. I was pleased with the speed and efficiency that he was able to install the softener and remove the old one and he left my basement just as he found it. He explained the workings of the softener. That the computer pretty much handles everything. That Culligan replaces the salt when needed. (Yeah, no more hauling 40lbs of salt for me). George came back last week to check on the softener to make sure it was performing as it should. He checked the water again. Everything is working great. He told me if I had any problems or questions to be sure and call him and he will take care of them for me. I'm very happy so far with my new softener.
I think sometimes we don't take time to remark on outstanding performance and just take it for granted. So I do want to take the time to tell you just how outstanding your service technician Rob is. I always request last stop and although I am told 3-5, he is

I always request last stop and although I am told 3-5, he is always finishing his day 6:30-7:30pm and arrives cheerful, dedicated, patient, and personable. And I know he has already carried in a lot of salt before he gets to me. He told me he has been with Culligan 8 years - wow! I hope you value him as much as I (the customer) do!
Everything is working really great and we couldn't be happier with the best water quality we've ever had. The peroxide is proving to be far better at killing the sulfur than the previous super chlorination systems did and no ugly surprise dose of chlorine after the back wash cycle.
